I had no ideas what so ever after completingThe Ingenious Artist from Southeastern Pennsylvania. I really wanted to do something with cannibalism because it kept coming up in the books I was listening to, as well as in music and television. I had many ideas, but none of them stuck. I guess I should explain "stuck". I have a general rule of thumb that if a specific image for a painting "sticks" around in my head from at least 2 weeks, it is worth painting. I've been working very fast these days so I am constantly thinking of things and praying something sticks so I'll be ready for the next painting. No specific/entire image was sticking. I tried to come up with something quick out of bits and pieces that were, so I decided to depict myself curled up in the lap of my dog Twombly suckling milk from her. I did prep for it but it simply fell apart. I went down into the studio and sat. Somewhat inspired by my cannibalistic urges, I came up with this image of being mocked by industrious hands, because I was physically capable and willing to work, but my mind wasn't.

Mocking of Christ with the Virgin and Saint Dominic
1439-1443
Fresco
Cell 7, Convent of San Marco, Florence

I have been in love with this image for quite some time. Each disembodied part is from a separate act performed against Christ before the crucifixion. I affectionately refer to my painting as the "Mocking of Chris" because of this image.
